Before the images were removed from the UK page, it stated 'Q3' beside the images, so I don't know if that's supposed to mean 3rd quarter or what? Other than that, I don't know when the official release date will be, but IMO, with these images being leaked like this, an announcement has got to follow soon. So far, everybody on the DPReview forums with a 'friend in the loop' as a rep or a camera store owner has been claiming that these units will be available for order before Christmas.

I need a new camera as I sold my D70 to my inlaws. I was going to get the D50, because I like its skin tones, but now I´m definately waiting too see the features and the price of the D200.
It is a bit tempting to buy a 10-12mp camera, because at that point they are reaching maturity and the lenses resolution becomes the bottleneck. So D200 will probably become obsolete more slowly than the bodies before it.

that is one slick lil cam. With the Canon 5D coming out though that's some stiff competition.

IMO, Canon's 5D and the Nikon D200 shouldn't be compared. Canon will release a successor to their 20D pretty soon, and it will be that camera that must meet and/or exceed the mark that the D200 makes.

I know that the D200 will be a great camera, but I'm slightly disappointed that it didn't take advantage of the situation and produce a sensor slightly higher than 12MP as correlated between the previous D1x and D100 models (5MP vs 6MP). I believe that a move like that, in terms of positioning a product strategically, would have effectively made the D200 a 5D and D30 fighter in one, similar to how the D2x fights the 1Ds and 1D at the same time. Of course, that's not to say that this isn’t really their strategy (fight four of Canon’s cameras with 2 at half the price).
Obviously, there's more to a camera than its Megapixels, and the overall quality and performance of the D200 will be nothing short of stellar. Nikon still appears to keep a reserved approach with their cameras. No FF announced yet. But belief is building. No doubt, they're chess boxing with Canon, and so far Canon has been the aggressor, hard to say if that'll benefit them in the long run.

I think this D200 will be great, but I´m getting the D50. I can´t wait until January to get the camera. I also saw the 17-35 2.8 deal on ebay which I grabbed, so I need a body to test it when it arrives.
Then I´ll see next year if I want to upgrade from the D50 or just wait for the D70s replacement.
