In that case, yes. I was under the impression you were working with simple 1080p files.

In any case, an external SSD drive won’t be as fast on paper but it will be as fast in practice - and much cheaper. And small. No sweat.

Next upgrade around you can invest in more internal storage.

It's no big deal I'm going order a 2tb external nvme thunderbolt enclosure for larger projects.

So two weeks now with the M1 Mac mini 16Gbyte version.

It's much faster than my old iMac, however.

Initially, it refused to see my Pegasus thunderbolt raid, indeed to run a terminal command and update the Pegasus unit itself, that worked.
There is a script that forces FCPX to run via rosetta, you do get some of the plugins back that do not run under SOC native, but not all.

But today, both the Mail app and Safari went nuts. Mail is unusable as is Safari, freezes and crashes. I am not alone; this has been a widely reported problem—a tad embarrassing for Apple of their new machine when their own apps fail. Chrome and Firefox are fine.

Which T3 enclosure and nvme blade are you looking at? I've researched the enclosures quite a bit, and there are issues of heat dissipation and attendant thermal throttling with some of them.

I've forgotten most of the research I did a month ago. Fledging dissipates heat the best but is large, has a fan, and is expensive. OWC performs the best for the money. I'm leaning towards getting Sabrent tool-free usb c and a thunderbolt, that way I can easily swap out the drives. (my older mac has usb 3, and my dell laptop has usb c , both would be incompatible with thunderbolt). The issue with thunderbolt while faster you're limited to only devices that have it and because it is faster heat throttling can happen . If I went with the usb c enclosure it would be slower, but half the price, but because it's slower it won't get as hot and throttle, and compatible with every device I own. The other thing to consider is how you're going to use it. Throttle seems to happen only when copying amounts of data, but if most of the time you're editing off it then that shouldn't be an issue.

Looks like Apple is coming out with the M1X next with 12 cores (8 high-performance, 4 power-efficient) for the 16-inch and 14-inch MBP later this year (Q2 maybe?) as well as the 27-inch iMac. And some time later the M2 will have 32 cores for Mac Pros and top of the line MBPs. Or so the rumors say

    Kibbles and bits.

In Q1 2020, Apple held 5.8 percent market share, Google held 5.3 percent, and Windows had 87.5 percent market share. In Q4 2020, Microsoft’s market share slipped to just 76.7 percent. Apple had 7.7 percent share in Q4, and Chromebooks claimed no less than 14.4 percent of the market.

Qualcomm’s Acquisition of Nuvia Could Help it Create Custom Core Designs Instead of Licensing Existing Ones

According to opinions of journalists like Stephen Ellis, WinFuture reports that in the future, Qualcomm isn’t going to be relying on simply licensing CPU designs developed by ARM for use in its own chips. While Qualcomm currently does this, its plan is reportedly to take on Apple by developing custom cores. With the Nuvia acquisition, the San Diego chipmaker has the opportunity to do just that.

Wonder why they may release with no fanfare... rumor perhaps has it mixed up, I could see this being tied to WWDC rather than a dedicated event. In any case it’s good timing overall for them releasing the pro model later, by this time a lot more software will be native - including pro apps like Adobe Premiere being out of beta most likely. Can’t wait to see benchmarks and pricing.
