    It's the brown M&Ms. My wife was a Talent Coordinator for the Grammys and other shows. Believe me I know.

    As Van Halen explained it, brown M&M was a canary-in-the-coalmine test for the promoters and so on to pay attention to the contract details. In other words, had someone been asleep at the wheel and not followed up on brown M&M's rider, their reputation would take a corresponding knock.

    The band did not actually eat the candies.

    PS. Mmmmm, candies .... mmmm, chocolate.
