    Question
How often do people rent cameras (such as Reds) privately or from a small business?
Just curious to know if that's something worth diving into and renting locally in Toronto.

Not sure how often one would rent to justify doing it

You have a Red you want to rent?

Call a local rental house (or five) and offer them 50/50 or 60/40.

When they are short of Reds they will call you.

If you get an inquiry go through them.

Rental houses have decent insurance and methods of checking out the clientele.

In the USA there are sites like ShareGrid and KitSplit (I assume the same thing applies for Canada), but their insurance only covers damage, it doesn't cover someone neglecting to return your gear. See this PetaPixel article.

There are already a number of rentals available in your area. And don't forget you can have pretty much any camera available shipped to your location. I sure wouldn't want to be in the rental business in todays market.

    But that's just me.

Sure, I’ll rent out my camera package.

But they have to rent me with it...

That's how I always felt about it too; I could never bring myself to lend/rent anything to anyone without being present although I rent all of the time.

Yes. I don't know how rental houses stay in business with the ridiculous rates, like 3-for-7 and even less on long term rentals. It would be like a client calling you and saying, "Hey, we want you on this week long shoot, but we're only going to pay you for three days of work".

I wouldn't rent a camera to anyone. I need my cameras. I can't afford to a have some idiot pawing over my camera. Maybe they think eating greasy pizza and operating a camera at the same time makes sense. Or maybe they don't want salty water and sand in their camera on a windy day at the beach, but don't mind renting yours to do the same.

Never assume the person who is renting is as affectionate about your camera as you are.
