I am having trouble editing 4K in FCP 7. After importing the files, when I drag them into the timeline I get a red message in the canvas window saying "Out of memory. Free up memory and window will redraw."

For the record, my Mac Pro has 16 GB of RAM and the source camera was a Panasonic LX100.

What exactly do I need to do to free up the memory? Is Apple asking me to uninstall unneeded programs or something? I'm able to play the files fine but just can't edit them on the timeline.

    Thanks

It has nothing to do with the amount of memory that you have. The problem is that you're trying to edit 4k .h264 that's wrapped up as an .mp4. You'll need to convert the files to Pro Res if you want to edit them.

Thanks for that. So what's the name of the converter you'd recommend? Hopefully the file conversion from 4K won't take too long to convert as I'm a day behind with my editing...

Can't you convert them on import?
Maybe just get FCPX, it't not that expensive to own...

Wouldn't converting cause a loss of resolution?

FCP 7 cannot handle a resolution that is wider than 4000 pixels so 4K editing is not possible.

Try Compressor. If that doesn't work, try mpeg streamclip.
