I have it on my iPhone (it's free). It's more of a ballpark "scouting this location, whereabouts will I need to be stop-wise, already have my phone so what the heck" sort of thing. As Mr. O'Hara says, for actually rolling, the WFM is always better.

Tablets and Smartphones are fine for the delivery of content. In this capacity there are existing applications and uses which folks haven't even thought of yet. However, I CREATE content in a whole host of areas for which current Tablets and Smartphones are completely USELESS at the moment.

OK, we know there are things phones and tablets can't do.

Further exposition of various things they can or might be able to do is probably more helpful to the OP, however.

The most useful cinematography app for the iPad is Netflix.

Forgot to add "Sun Scout" to my app list.

I believe it's cheaper than Sun Seeker, & more importantly, easier to read in direct Sun.

I've only used the the sun path apps on the iPhone, but find them indispensable, & so much more convient then lugging around a Compass, plus Clinometer.

The best use of an iPad on set is to hold dailies. The DIT one lights everything and loads it onto the iPad so the dp can match the lighting between scenes on different days. Scripty and art department loved it too.

I use my iPhone light meter with my Holga all the time. ;)

In addition to Sun Seeker, I like the Magic Hour app. It's for iPhone, but I have it on my iPad as well; you can 2x, as mentioned. It automatically updates your location via location services and tells you precisely what time ggolden hour begins and ends, as well as sunset start and end times.

A neat practical use I've found for you gaffers out there is if you're trying to achieve the TV light bouncing off of talents' faces, sit the iPad in their lap, turn the brightness all the way up, and play a video on it. It works well and is much less tedious than the projector method.

Definitely get the 3G/4G if you get an iPad. The device is almost useless without network.

Im going to have to check into the dailies apps.
