    OK, this might really and truly be a stupid question, but is there any advantage to taking my exterior establishing shots on my HV20, high definition, if it eventually ends up being captured at standard definition?

    Do you mean capturing to your NLE at standard def by turning on the HDV downconverter in the camera? If you one day wind up wanting to use the footage in a reel that's HD, sure there's an advantage in doing so. You might get a slightly sharper image by shooting in HD and downconverting in post than if you shoot in SD to start with as well. That's more something you'll have to test out with your workflow though.

    In my experience, yes there is a slight advantage in terms of overall image quality and obviously also as Moseph mentioned it is advantageous to shoot in a more flexible format for potential future uses.
