That is of course an option - a way to shoot to deliver 1080/2k , but then you are carrying 'dead' memory/data, might not be able to record onboard and dependent on lens choice may not be presenting the image circle - meaning you are just recording black and might have some montoring issues

It seems that taking a 4k signal and downscaling to 1080 is more complex than just recording the central 1080,

Therefore it should be within the onboard processing power - its on the D4 and GH2

but Im no sensor wonk so what do I know..

I wonder if the internals of the rocker switch might give a hint to Sony's plans.

This is very interesting. If my calculations are correct, 1080p crop would be very close to 16mm film size...

    Perfect on S16 glass!

Another idea.. (and all mty ideas are based, I guess on current processor power)

Magic Lantern has just introduced a HDR mode where it swaps ISO between frames, and the frames are blended post to give an HDR image of some nature

Now if you took the power of 50p and did this for a 25p timeline it might work well

Not too bad with regular 16mm glass either (which are quite a lot cheaper and common). Here's the minimum image circle for 16mm format:

I proposed this idea back in Jan of 2011, in reference to (at the time) the AF100. I was "laughed" at. Who's laughing now!?!?! ;) Just kidding. It's always seemed logical to me to allow a large sensor camera to use a smaller portion of the sensor in order to make use of readily available 2/3" broadcast zoom lenses. This would make a camera indeed more like an "all-in-one" option for people like me who aren't going to drop 8K for a cinema camera and another 8K for an ENG events style cam.

I think this 'software zoom mode' has a lot of legs.

    Let's say that on a 4k sensor, you have a 2x range.

Every Prime lens becomes a zoom lens.

Just for those intimate pull-ins you get with an interview. A 35mm Rokinon/Samyang gets pulled in to 70mm. Nice.

Your 17-55 can start at 17mm and end at 110. At f2.8!

The zoom can ramp as beautifully as After Effects doing the same on a 4k Original in a 2K hole.

Now, recompute for 720p - which would be intersting for those of us shooting for the web.

I say bring it on! Be Brave! Make it Lanc/Touchscreen as well as Assignable Button.

Maybe it's the best use of 4K for the next decade.
