Canon's compact mirrorless cameras' specs have just been leaked:
- Video is 1920×1080 30p/25p/24p, 1280×720 60p/50p, 640×480 30p/25p
Method – video compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, audio Linear PCM, MOV format
Check out the leaked specs here: http://www.canonwatch.com/rumor-eos-...ations-leaked/
Sure, it´s a small compact camera that will probably compete with the likes of the NEX5N, but this is just the first camera. I´m sure there will be more with pro and semi-pro features.
Lets at least hope for high bit rate and full manual control on this one. A mic input would be nice too, but I don´t really see it. Canon will be very careful with this...they don´t want to canibalize their current DSLRs...

Bringing forth a mirrorless body and a line of more video capable lenses bodes well for the possibility of consumer/prosumer large chip camcorder bodies, that are significantly cheaper than the current 'cinema eos' line. Don't forget that canon has a history of offering similar specs at lower price points for different market segments. An eos adapter will assure compatiblilty with high end L glass, if you want it, and I'm sure third parties will be quick to produce manual adapters for other things.
Lets hope christmas brings a camcoder option that shook things up the way the HV20 did. Sony obviously has little interest in that segment. My films are at www.vimeo.com/channels/beeflix

It looks like the T4i sensor, processor, LCD, and features in a body about 1/2 the width, depth, and weight.
The 22 mm is a 2.0 STM lens (silent video focusing.) If we are lucky, the quality will be similar to the 40 mm pancake, which is steller!
Interesting. Hopefully 2-3 more cameras from Canon later this year, including a higher end mirror less, and a lower end full frame (if we are lucky, with a strong video feature set.)

Here is the first video sample with a bunch of Canon adapted lenses
http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/sam...ovie.html?high
Full specs are out. They have a mic input, and manual control over video AND audio. It has nice feature like selecting the point of interest via touchscreen while filming. The AF is contrast based, so I don´t expect a mind blowing performance. It would have been nice if they had added a tiltable lcd screen (It does output video via HDMI while filming though) and more physical controls.
Lets hope they release an avanced version.Last edited by rawfa; 07-23-2012 at 02:43 AM.

Nice little video demo. I wonder if this will give the GH2 a run for its money.. My main curiosity is how fast the little computer in there is refreshing those lines... If Canon can remove skew (or dramatically minimize it) then they would have a major contender.
Conversation with my wife a few minutes ago (just woke up)...
Wife - "LOOK!!" (hands me phone w/article pulled up)
Me - "OK, so Canon is finally releasing a mirrorless camera?"
Wife - "Yeah, I'm rooting for it!"
Me - "Why?"
Wife - "Because its Canon."
I root for the right tools for the right people, but she wants so desperately for Canon to put my little army of GH2s to shame!

From what I´ve been reading this is basically a T4i inside a compact body and with a different mount. I don´t see it as a game changer...unless someone is able to hack it.
I was kind of surprised with the us$800 price tag. For this price you can get the NEX5N with both lenses or several different micro 4/3 combos with better lenses.Rafael Lopes

I don't think it will compete in GH2's market share, much less the E-M5 or any of the more 'high-end' mirrorless cameras. It will compete for the GF and EP series, though, and also the Nikon 1 system. It'll be interesting to see how it fairs in the market. Price wise it's up against the Sony NEX offerings, which have a few more included features, but Canon may have the edge in intuitive interface and simplicity of use (which is definitely where they seem to be focusing the advertising strategy). A lot of video people are bemoaning the fact that it doesn't have 1080p60, but I don't think the typical consumer puts much weight into that feature. For the target market they're going for, as long as it has a video function, that's all they care about. I'd say the primary target here is great images with the least amount of hassle; ease of use is the name of the game in this particular segment of the market. I'm sure a higher-end mirrorless will come down the pipeline soon that's more geared to advanced enthusiasts.
At any rate, I'd definitely be interested in trying one. The sample image from the 22mm lens looks very nice: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/sam...wnloads/01.jpg
Personally, I'm still holding out for the rumored lower-priced full frame SLR.

I'd love to see a camcorder like the g10, xa10 with this lens mount. I'm interested in the progression but not the current offering. We'll see how it plays out. I'm sure there will be third party adapters soon enough. Canon can be quite aggressive with seasonal promotions and what not. See how a package looks in the fall, and it may be an interesting option. It would allow for the use of lenses not easily adapted to EF, as well as a platform for acquiring EF lenses for use with the BlackMagic. I'm not going to argue that that GH2, and likely GH3 will have superior video quality, but there is the practical issue that everyone I know shoots canon, so lots of lenses available.

I think it looks like a fantastic little camera. I don't care what all the photogs are saying about it. It's basically a 650D that can fit in a small bag. A perfect little travel/walk around camera for a day at a festival or out in a park. I like that you can adapt EF lenses to it with full control. I like that they didn't seem to cripple the video functionality compared to the 650D. Even though that wasn't incredible to begin with. I also like the look of the camera and don't understand why some people think is looks ugly. Much nicer looking than the NEX cameras IMO. I also like the shorter flange to focal distance and all the great adapters it will enable.
It also seems to me that Blackmagic now has a new mount to move to while keeping with the Canon system. If they can legally that is.
I'm already a m4/3 shooter. But I only have a single native m4/3 lens. The rest is adapted minolta/nikon glass. I may just switch from m4/3 to to this system in the next year depending on what else Canon offers in terms of bodies for the M system. I've always liked Canon color and I like the larger chip. I haven't been thrilled with IQ from the m4/3 cameras when it comes to stills. But with this being a smaller 650D and allowing vintage glass, that's enough to perhaps push me its way.

Canon mirrorless...the doors are now open
