Apart from a continous "trundering sound" as soon as the camera is switched on (which seems correct). I also get a fairly high pitched whistling sound rather like a kettle!every so often. When it does this particular noise it is easily picked up by the mike and I can hear it some distance away. Not really loud but that certain type of noise that is penetrating. Switching the OIS off and not altering the aperture or focus settings or zoom settings has no effect on stopping this noise. Nor does using these settings either. The lens has done this noise on and off since getting it in April. And I have no other Panasonic lens to compare it too. My 25mm voigtlander lens is so beautifully silent of course! Not sure whether this is what I should expect or not...

Mine is silent. Maybe there is something wrong with yours.

Looks like it may well be faulty

Here is a quick video I just uploaded. You can hear the "sound" over the normal hiss of the built in mic. This sound starts after about 10 minutes after the camera has first been switched on, whether you are filming or not!

We need some other audio to judge. If voices would sound normal volume in this clip with that sqeeling going on, then yes, that is indeed bad. But it just sounds from the room noise and what not like the gain is super high, in which case, yeah, it might well pick up tiny electric pulses. I don't know if my 14-140 does that, because I don't usually have the audio gain on my GH2 above the 1st or 2nd notch.
But maybe the gain isn't cranked up, in which case, yes, you indeed have a problem. If the gain is super high, then I'm not so sure. May still be a problem, but it may just be typical electrical interference.Last edited by blazer003; 07-30-2012 at 01:22 PM.

Here is another example with me talking over it. The audio setting is on 2. I can hear it on the 1 setting as well and also from about a 18 inches or more away from the camera in a quiet room. No noise from the camera when first switched on. This noise starts roughly after about 10-20 minutes after the camera is switched on. Perhaps a noisy electronic component or gear/cog or whatever is used in the lens to alter the aperature, focus, OIS?

Yeah, I have little knowledge of the inner workings of the lens, how it achieves it's optical image stabilization, but that is definitely noisy. Is this the onboard mic? It sounds like electrical interference, but I noticed you said it's audible to the ear during shooting, which says something mechanical. And I reread where you said it was whether OIS is on or off. I'm afraid I can't offer much. I know my lens never has done this yet. You may have just unfortunately gotten a bad lens, and I don't know if Panasonic would be willing/able to fix it. It seems that for the most part the QA on the GH2 and lenses has been very good. You may have just gotten unlucky. Best of luck to you going forward.

How noisy should the 14- 140mm be in use?
