Editing from a sequence or "Event"

Can someone help me out with a workflow issue?

In FC7 I would make a master raw sequence and edit from that in the viewer. Essentially allowing me to scrub through all my raw in a single swipe instead of pecking at individual clips.
Can I do the same with an "Event"? I'm stuck. Ive made a new project titled "Test Raw" with all the files in it etc…How do I make that EVENT or bring it into an EVENT Folder to edit from it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Not sure what you meant by "raw" sequence, but it sounds like you want to scrub through all your clips in an event quickly without having to select and view each one individually?

One way is to select the event, then create a compound clip out of the event's clips (File>New Compound Clip). Double click it to open it in the timeline. Now it acts a lot like a single clip for you to scrub over and edit like any other clip.

Raw sequence would be all of my raw footage in a sequence to edit from.
Thank you for the tip. My question now would be be how would I make tthat compound clip into an "EVENT"
trom which I can edit from in the viewer?

I am pkg editing, I am not cleaning up clips in the timeline.
I want to be able to do J/L/overwrites and Apend edits from the viewer.

    Thanks!

    Hi John,

Looks like we can't send clips back to event library: http://fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-...-project-event

For now the workaround should be export the project using the current settings (pretty fast, same codec) and import the .mov in event library for cutting. I did a fast editing like that using in/outs and marking as favorites (F), then showing only the favorite clips as thumbnails for selecting and moving to a project. My shorcuts were: J K L, I O and F to create all the subclips. I'm using keywords for better organizing (cmd+K) as well.

    Cheers,
    Ulisses

Why not just Select All in an Event and drop them into a Project? Isn't that the same thing?

Or Select All in and Event, right-click, Create New Compound Clip, right there in the Event.

How do you NOT edit from a Timeline in any version of FCP?

I think what got lost in translation is that certain tutorials simply show the viewer how to drop a large sequence of raw material into a Project and then do simple edits to clean it up right in the timeline.
My background is news. Package editing etc...Picking though individual clips is not an option, so we would make a master sequence of raw to edit from. Scrubbing through 30minutes of files in an instant.
I am looking for that same kind of workflow in X. I have done it easily in 7 ( although nesting was always a pain sometimes). Your suggestion seems to make sense. I'll give it a try. thank you!

So just drop everything into a Project and go to town. Same thing. What's not the same? I don't get what's not working for you.

Clip>Break Apart Clip Items will expand your compound clip on the timeline to their individual clips to edit with.

Uhm.....if you put the event into icon-view you can skim through your clips very fast. Drag in-out-regions and hit "E" to drop them to the end of the timeline.

The other way would be as suggested "Select all" and then hit "E" to drop them into the project.
Now you can play though the timeline and trim with the commands "Trim-to-start" and "Trim-to-end". I have these two commands at the shortcuts "1" and "2". This works while the playhead keeps moving and is great for quick newsedits.

Yeah rethink that workflow a bit. Sounds like adding extra work...
