Have you thought about using Squib/blanks setup? That is what I use for my gun scenes. The blood looks real as it explodes out of the body and we use blanks in the gun making the flash from the gun real looking.

@JoeButch probably not that much, but we just wanted a bit of extra sizzle. Yeah, it's not like you really need anything additional with the amount of fat bacon has on its own.
@New_Zealand I'd love to try that in the future. This video just had such a quick turnaround time: wrote the thing / got the camera on Friday, filmed on Saturday, that it wasn't feasible to do. That, and I also did want to experiment with adding VFX in post. That being said, the next time I do something a bit more serious I absolutely want to go practical with it.
