I get asked all the time what a proper boom technique is. Here is a good example. Yes, I know the guy doesn't have headphones on, but that's not uncommon in Europe.

Well, he deserves his pay!
And about the headphones, I guess once the recorder is set properly, with a good one (with limiter) you can't really go wrong when you know what you're doing.

Well, I would imagine in this situation there is a separate production sound mixer involved here, at least a 2 or 3 person sound crew.

The guy is actually a girl and her precision is astounding.
And yeah, pretty much European booming style, without headphones and a production sound mixer somewhere in the back, riding the levels.
As a side note, we use manly shotgun mics for indoor.
It's a traditional thing, if you ever listen to an original German dialogue scene, you her much more room than in US films.
I never liked that sound, so I guess I'm one of the rare guys that uses a hyper for indoor dialogue over here.

While the first boom example looked like it could be wired to the rest of the sound capture system... this one looks like the boom is connected to a wireless transmitter. Would that be the case? And if so, even if it is any one's 'guess', what sort of wireless would it be?

John Midgley was the production sound mixer, and I don't know what gear he uses, but my guess would be either Zaxcom, Lectro, or Audio Ltd.
Since Audio Ltd. is a UK based company, and I think Hugo was shot over there, I would place my money on Audio Ltd., but I don't know for sure.
