I cut my last feature in Vegas 9. It was shot on the T2i (so same codec as the 5Dii). However, due to that computer being 8 years old at the time (a single celeron processor and 2 gigs of RAM), I did an offline edit and conformed the online in After Effects. At my old job, we used Canon DSLRs exclusively and I used Vegas quite a few times to cut some things. No transcoding or anything.

Check out the Sony Vegas forum as there are several folks on there with 5D, 7D and other assorted DSLRs.

I've switched to Premiere, but I edited a commercial and a music video shot on the MK2 on Vegas 10.

    No, I didn't transcode.

I'm trying to. I just rendered to Quicktime on my PC and it came out choppy. I'd love to have a guide on what project settings to put vegas pro 11 on for my video recorded on my mark2. I think I have it right. Any one know if it should be on 8 or 32 bit? More importantly, what should I render it as??????? Quicktime render came out choppy (interlacey?) I'm trying to colloborate with others so they can do color grading on their systems. My project is a 20 minute comedy. Everytime I choose a render I can't even open the damn file. Pls keep in touch to pass on good info!

I believe the 8 or 32 only makes a minor difference on generated gradients and stuff. 8 should be fine from what I have read (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Since you are working with others ask them what codec/file type they want it rendered to so they can color grade it. Basically you want to use a CODEC that is as lossless as possible. You would probably be fine using any H.264 codec (like Sony AVC or Mainconcept with MP4 wrapper) with a high bit rate (over 10 million) and I doubt you would notice any image degradation.

But there are lossless codecs that are good to use if multiple people are going to be working on the video files and re-rendering them several times. I know some will recommend ciniform, I don't use it because it costs money. Lagarith is one that is free, but the negative is very large file sizes.

Lastly the interlace issues should be easily dealt with in Vegas in the project settings. The best way to find the acceptable settings are find a frame that really shows the interlace. Then play with the setting until the image looks good. try using interpolate (not blend) for the fields. You can also right click on the video clip in the timeline and try the different resample settings, I usually use disable (I think it only makes a different if you have 60FPS footage).

Hope some of this makes sense you you. I have a render setting tutorial on my youtube channel, it's for final renders that are to be uploaded to youtube but it may still help on some of the settings for the various codecs.

I received my mkiii. What is the best setting in Vegas 9 to keep it from chopping? I looked at a clip that I shot with the t3i and it is pretty choppy a pain to watch and edited. Thanks for any feedback.
