Curious if when in video mode if the GH2 can be started up silently? How loud is the button to turn it on and does the shutter open when it is powered up?

All dslr's that I know of make a ton of noise from the switch clicking on, raising the mirror and opening the shutter when powered on. Even the lens cover of my Panasonic TM700 makes too much noise when it opens on power up.

    Cheers,
    Pete

Other than the party poppers confetti explosion that shoots out of he secret hatch upon the very first boot up after a hack upgrade, it's quiet as a mouse.

Just put it in sleep mode. After one minute it shuts off and you can just tap a button to get it back on totally silent.

If you turn off the beeps in the menu, the switch barely makes a click if you do it carefully, and there is the lightest of clicks if you're using an OIS lens. That's about it. Now if you take a photo, you're going to hear the shutter, obviously. But video wise, I don't think you could expect much quieter from any device.

So the shutter doesn't open and close when going in and out of sleep mode?

If so, this is super good news. Trying to film critters from close range remotely without a sound in super high quality is the goal.

Thanks for the feedback every one!

    Cheers,
    Pete

The 40fps burst mode uses an electronic shutter which is a lot quieter than the mechanical shutter, so it's useful if maximum stealth is needed.
