    GH1 to Blu-ray?

I've never jumped on the blu-ray bandwagon. I don't even own a player or an HDTV. I watch everything on my computer. But I was considering picking up a small USB2 powered blu-ray writter for my (late 2008) macbook. This one here

I'd like to use it for playing blu-ray movies rented from redbox and also bought. I don't own any yet. But I'd also like to backup some of my GH1(3) videos I've shot. I use an older 40Mbps hack that I'm not really thrilled with. It errors out on me all the time even with my class 10 Sandisk extreme card. I guess I shoot a lot of wide high detail stuff. So I was considering dropping back down to the default firmware or maybe trying a different hack setting.

It's my understanding (either right or wrong) that the file format and folder structure the GH1 shoots with is compatible with blu-ray. Which leads me to believe I could just drop the private folder on a blu-ray disc, put it in a player and it would play. Is that true?

But what is the max bitrate blu-ray can handle without having to re-encode/render the footage? Also what is the fastest way to get my previous video footage onto blu-ray to be playable in players? Would the method I mentioned above work?

Last but not least are there any issues I should be aware of with blu-ray and Mac OSX Lion?

    Hey roxics,

Depending on your software, I have actually done this with FCP. I took my sequence, and burned a Blu Ray to a regular SD-DVD and played it in HD on my Blue Ray player. Basically, it burnt an HD movie, to an SD disc, that since it is H264, there are many Blue Ray players that will play this. Also, the DVD was burned using the built in MAC drive....no external dvd burner, or Blue Ray burner.

Hope that helps...let me know if you have any questions. But maybe this is an option for what you want to do, with pretty much no new costs.

That's not a bad idea. So was it just burnt as a data disc then?

I dont use FCP. I do use Premiere Pro CS5 and I'm about to make the leap to a CS6 subscription. I know Encore burns blu-ray. Just didn't know if I would have to transcode my footage or not from my hacked GH1. Also wondered what other hick-ups blu-ray may or may not have on a mac.

I would like to get a blu-ray drive to watch some movies and backup some data as well. At $99 for a portable writer/reader from a name brand like Samsung, it seems the prices have finally come to a point where it would be worth it to me. Just want to make sure it's not going to be a complete headache.

Gotcha. Yeah I have only done that out of FCP....but it looks like this video is the same technique, just using premiere.

The disc will work, but there is currently no software for viewing a Blu-ray encoded movie under OSX.

The GH1 file structure actually implements the AVCHD standard, not the blu-ray standard. Most blu-ray players will also play AVCHD disks so it shouldn't be an issue. Some players won't expect to see AVCHD disks on BD media so that might be an issue. You can always burn it onto a DVD and that should work (if it fits).
