I'm sure this topic has been covered but I can't find any info based on others' topic titles.

I shot some test footage today using my HPX170 at 720p24p. I'm making a feature and a couple shorts and I want the 24p (film)look. I fired up P2CMS to "ingest" the footage and saw some strange information in the file list. It said the footage was 720p at 59.94fps. Can anyone tell me what happened?

Also, when I selected the DVCPROHD 720p24 preset in Premiere Pro CS5.5, the frame size is 960 x 720. Shouldn't it be 1280 x 720?

Am I selecting the correct settings? I had a DVX100b that I used for several short films and loved the straight-forwardness of set-up and capturing, but I recently bought this HPX170 to shoot HD. I like the P2 workflow when it comes to shooting and ingesting, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the Premiere set-up.

Does anyone know of a book or online tutorials that make things painfully clear when it comes to this? I wouldn't consider myself a novice but I'm having more trouble than I think I should be having.

    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    1) If you shoot 720/24pN, it will be recoreded as 23.976. If you shoot 720/24P, it will be recorded as 59.94. However, they will appear nearly identical.

    2) DVCPRO HD in 60hz is 960x720 with a 1.333 pixel aspect ratio. The pixels are rectangular, 1/3 wider than they are tall. If you multiply 960 by 1.333, you get 1280. The appearance is exactly the same.

    3) As for correct settings, well, that depends on what you're selecting (you didn't mention it), and what you want to do.

    4) The manual covers this stuff. Barry Green's HVX/HPX Book covers this stuff. The HVX BootCamp DVD covers this stuff (the HVX200 and the HPX170 are operationally identical for all of what you're asking about).

Once your clips are in Premiere, drag a clip to the new item button (at the bottom of the project tab next to new folder) and it will open a new sequence that matches your clip's settings (this is on CS5, I think it's the same on 5.5).

Are your clips 24p or 24pn? 24pn has "the film look" but gives about 2.5 times more storage per card than 24p and is what is typically used.

There is a 16 page doc at Adobe on workflow with Panasonic cameras in CS6. A lot of info about import and codecs:

Thanks guys. All your suggestions/tips were extremely helpful. I guess I should actually read the manuals!
