Ok, now that I have your attention ...LOL!!!

Does anyone know what actors use to smoke in movies? I am shooting a scene that requires the actors to smoke a joint and I need something they can actually smoke.

I don't know what the done thing is but smoking shops and tobacconists have herbal products that are often used to mix with tobacco and less legal alternatives for flavour or mild extra effects. Alternatively find some dried herbs that look right for rolling the joint and then switch to tobacco (presumably your actors are smokers). Have the actors sign a release if you are going to have them smoke. Smoking has been officially banned during work hours in my last 3 workplaces, allegedly for fear of being sued by a worker for lung cancer. Whatever happened to personal responsibility. Blame lawyers and insurance people. I suspect it has more to do with downtime due to smoko than health. Doesn't bother me, I don't smoke. Magic shops have fake cigarettes that appear lit and produce faux smoke.

This came up before, the producer wanted the real thing because he said pot heads would know

I think the best advice was to Google then contact local medical groups for assistance.

Also write to and get permission from the local federales.

Okay..........film or no........ DVXUser does not condone the usage of any illicit drug on set nor should we be suggesting how to obtain said real ganja. If you use the real thing on a set.......having the actors sue in the future about lung cancer would not be my first concern.

It would be the liability incurred for allowing/providing the drugs to the actors, and the liability of what happens on and after the shoot. Even if it's a no-pay film, you still can be held liable for any incident involving the usage and possession of the weed. "You" being the film/production team. Including their drive home.

That would fall under the heading of "not so wise" filmaking for me. It's just like using real alcohol on set for your actors to drink........what if it takes 10 takes? You are going to have useless actors after 1 take.


LOL, do like Egg Born suggested......get herbal cigs, take the herbal part out. Use oregano. Spray it with hairspray to "clump" and give it that "frosty" look (let it dry). Then for the "smoking" part, switch the oregano out for the herbal "tobacco".

Use a "cut" point for the switch out.

And I agree that faking the ganja would be quite easy - gosh, you just have to find someone who knows what it looks like... ahem, "not sure myself", **cough**....

Your actors can just puff on it filling their mouths and not actually inhale deeply, kind of like smoking a cigar. This depends on how close up you are, if they are supposed to cough and so on.

You can always spot the non-smoker actors because the smoke always comes out of their mouth, never their nose.

if you see an actor blowing smoke out of their nose, they are legitimately smoking.
