Thanks Mike for the detailed reply, you've been very helpful. I really need to learn more about the differences between the recording options, so I am going to put together some questions and perhaps if you have the time you can help with some explanations. I've got Barry's book on the 170 and it has explained a lot but there are still a few things I don't understand. I need to learn a bit more before I buy a new camera.

I had a look at the reviews of the JVC HM600 and it does look good and with a very good price as well.
