Can HVX record to iMovie in 720 or 1080?

Just upgraded my DVX to a HVX. I use it with a MacBook Pro iCore 5, 2.53 ghz, OS 10.7.4 and iMovie HD and Final Cut Express 3.5. I do not have a P2 card so I like to record directly to my hard drive. So far it appears to me that I can only record when it is in tape mode at 480i. Is it not possible to record in 720 or 1080 directly to your computer? When I switch it to P2, iMovie just gives me a blue screen and says "camera no tape." In P2 mode, the tape shouldn't matter. (Maybe it means no P2 card?) Don't really want to spend $250 on a P2 card so hope there is some way I can record directly to my hard drive without it.

hi, i was using a fs-100 for recording with the hvx before i got some p2's... maybe you will find some useful informations in the fs-100's manual... http://www.focusinfo.com/dynassets/d...l-1023-10).pdf
i know there is a part in the manual, in which is explained how to enable the 720 and 1080 output via firewire. as far as i know the fs-100 supports direct recording in quicktime format... but i always used the mxf way to shoot...

    regards Stefan

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread...g-HVX200-to-PC Found this after a quick search, it about PC and different NLE but should help you some. A P2 card is much easier IMHO and priced used reasonably.

Just found this hope it helps.

OK. Set your camera up for whatever format you are wanting to shoot: DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD 720p60...whathaveyou. Connect your camera to your laptop via a firewire cable. Launch FCP. In FCP, choose the Easy Setup that matches the settings you selected in the camera. IF THEY DON'T MATCH EXACTLY THEN IT WON'T CAPTURE. Open the capture tool. You should see an image on the screen. If you don't, then FCP is configured properly.

If you are capturing to a laptop, you need to capture to an attached firewire drive. You cannot capture to the system drive. BUT...you will need to have a PCMCIA Firewire adapter so that you have a separate firewire bus, or you will drop frames. If you have a macbook pro, I don't know if they have made a firewire card adapter yet for that. Plus you only have one firewire port, so it won't work without that adapter.

Keep in mind that 720 Native modes are not streamed over firewire. 720/60P, 720/30P, and 720/24P are, but 30pN and 24pN are not.

Used P2 cards are getting pretty cheap. I bought two 16GB cards for $175 from members on this forum.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into those this evening. As it turns out, I got a FS-100 with the camera, however, the battery is completely dead and it didn't come with a charger. According to the documentation, it should charge off a firewire connection to the computer but that is not working so I am trying to find a charger for it. Will see if they have something at Radio Shack today.

Wouldn't mind picking up a deal on P2 cards like that!
