I own Sachtler,Miller and Ronford. and I never regret spending the money. Some of them are almost 20 years old.
Paying for a quality tripod that will last you generations of camera's is a good investment.

I thought I would share what I ended up with

O'Connor Model 30 converted to Mitchell standard base (from 125mm clawball)
Ronford-Baker 2-Stage Lightweight tripod with 150mm bowl and clawball to Mitchell Standard adapter

I got the head dirt cheap from a private seller. It looks almost new and is currently being overhauled and converted from 125mm clawball to Mitchell Standard base at Transylvania Film. The sticks are also secondhand, but very clean.

Overall I'm very pleased with these items.

Combined the cost was slightly less than something like a new Cartoni HD and a decent set of sticks, like the Sachtler 100 (although these aren't as flexible as the Ronfords in terms of height adjustments). This includes the cost of the overhaul of the O'Connor at Transylvania.

Thanks again to everyone for your input and advice.

    Cheers

    HL
