I'm considering buying a second hand Samurai. In response to a question I sent to Atomos about buying extra caddies though they warned me that Atomos does not accept a transferred warranty.
I was stunned. Is this unusual?
I've never before heard of a company not standing by their gear if you sell it during the warranty period. I don't think I'd want to buy something I couldn't sell.

A little digging and I see this is far more common than I thought. Seems to be true for PIX 240, for Nikon, perhaps for Sony, for lots of gear.
What does this mean for how commonly we buy and sell gear in our business? Would you buy a an expensive relatively new piece of gear if you realized there was no warranty?
What justifies this among manufacturers?

I think this loss of warranty also applies to new equipment you buy on e-bay. So always check with the manufacturer to see if the warranty still applies rather than merely assuming it does.

Samurai warranty not tranferrable?
