Its just happened to me...a large file over an hour of HD footage. The audio went from basic stereo to surround I did not do anything.
As original poster says the project plays back fine on the timeline but when exported the QT file audio just disappears after 10 min

Its not a stems problem all tracks selected...I'm still playing with it

Try to just hit CMD-E and export the ProRes. Then open that in Quicktime and see if it an ok ProRes export (which it should be, if you hear sound in the timeline). Then Export it as h.264 out of Quicktime or via Compressor.

Does some audio/video start in the timeline at the exact make where the audio drops? Maybe that file is corrupt or has some weird kHz setting that FCPX does´t like. I remember FCP7 crashed or did these things when using dodgy mp3-files in the projects.

I have tried the prores export..still the same problem, Ihave reset all the audio parameters on an individual clip and the problem is still there...

Also I tried to bring the original audio back in using "find in event browser" and replacing the current audio in the timeline with the original audio in the browser..still the problem persists, I deleted the render files associated with this project..no joy
There is no music just straight audio of the cam mics...
Just trashed FCPX pref and trying again...that did not work either..

my gut feeling some of the audio has went to 5.1 surround by its self...I reset it to stereo or 2 channel ( I have reset all audio parameters) and still the prob is there, before this jump to 5.1 audio all was good

    hmm..weird.
Can you try to select ALL in the timeline and then make a compound (OPT-G). Drop a com, pressor on it (so it needs to be worked/rendered) Export this.
If that does´t work, mute this compound (drag the audio line all the way down) and drop some wav-file as music onto it. If this fails also then I am out of ideas to see if it is the project or an individual clip.

Thanks I tried that...I selected one of the mute clips put on a compressor (to give it something to work on) and then exported..still no audio.
The audio disappears half way through a clip...I'm sure its something in the export to QT thats causing the issue

Be sure you are not exporting as Stems, too.

Well I think this one belongs to the X files category...probably something i did accidentally ...the troublesome "edits" were in a sub timeline, once i copied and pasted the entire thing onto the main time line all was good... i cant replicate the problem the software is behaving itself perfectly.
