I have a SataIII for my operating system and apps and have my 1080p footage on a normal drive. Would I see any performance boost if I get a 2nd SSD to put my 1080p footage on? I have a I7 machine with 18GB of RAM.

As a short term (and very expensive) fix, it would speed things up, but in a very inefficient manner. Rather than do that, I would save up for an 8 drive (or more) SATA Raid if you plan on editing high bit rate HD in the future.

I edit 1080p off plain ol' 7200 RPM SATA drives and it's butter. RAM and CPU are the biggest factors.
