    Hi
For an upcoming shoot I need a lens somewhere in the focal length range 18-24mm on my 7D, with 20mm being the sweet spot.
My 11-16 Tokina is too wide, and 28-75 Tamron too long.
    What options do I have?

Also, is it true that even with a non-L lens you still need to apply the 1.6 magnification factor?

    Thanks!

I've got a Canon 18-55mm that works fine for me. Goes for about a hundred bucks on amazon. Pretty slow, f3.5/f5.6, but it's the length you're looking for and super cheap.

both the canon and tamron mentioned above are great options for what you're looking for

the canon is the rebel's kit lens; construction is utter crap, but optics are actually quite good, and it will remain f/3.5 at 20mm (f/4 at 24mm); it also has IS, in case that's handy

you can check my sharpness and bokeh tests with both lenses in the links in my signature

I'm in the same boat. Just sold my 17-35mm L F2.8 as it was just too soft for my liking. All the options I've found going from there have been less than appealing or crazily priced.

I've resided myself to waiting for the the results of the new Canon 24mm F2.8 IS that should be available in June or if I get lucky picking up a vintage Zuiko OM 21 or 24mm. Those are also going for $500-$1000 on ebay. Just can't get myself to spend that kind of money. The Canon 24mm F1.4 L II is the pick of the crop, but at $1600 new and still $1350 used, I'd be married to Canon forever. Not sure I want to be that vested right now in Canon glass.

    Cheers,
    Pete

How fast do you need it? The 17-40 F4L is nice.

I sold my EF 50mm 1.4 because I was using the Tamron 17mm-50mm f2.8 non VC so much. The Tamron appeared sharper, has more contrast, and the highlights roll off nicer than the 50mm. The Tamron is a workhorse and is around $500.00.
