I know it's a weird request but we did a shoot for an agency that want's the source files and I'd like to edit the files before I hand them off. There's a couple of shots that have people in the background that didn't sign releases and I want to make sure they don't make it into the final edit. There's certain parts of those shots that are useable. No big deal to hand off ProRes files but I was trying to save some room on the drive by still using the MTS file. AVCHD has such great compression.

That would be a really bad idea. AVCHD has solid enough compression for a camera- but the last thing you want to do is re-compress footage back to it. It's like a xerox of a xerox- not intended for multiple generations.

I'd highly recommend you simply give them the source files rather than severely compromise the quality by editing them. If you really have some elements you don't want to be in the final version- ask them to sign a waiver over it or offer to give them ProRes or uncompressed versions with the stuff you're concerned about edited out.

Tell them the situation and then its their issue to deal with the talent aspect.

To be helpful...give them a time code log where the issues occur.

Thats what I would do anyway.

Makes sense. I was just hoping that I could download the codec and just render without recompression. ProRes it is!
    Thanks

I agree. I just don't want to take the risk that the editor doesn't get the message. It's too easy to get sued these days. Thanks for your input!

There's software like this http://www.aunsoft.com/split_cut_avc...recompression/ It will cut or splice AVCHD MTS files without recompression.

I think it's also possible to do it with Virtualdub and a media splitter extension.

Another that might work is http://www.ffprojects.net/tssplitter/

That looks perfect. Thanks for posting this. I'll give it a try when I get in studio tomorrow. Thanks again...this is exactly what I needed if it works.
