FCPX is fast and its getting better. You'll need some tutorials to get used to the new storyline concept, organization and workarounds, but I enjoy editing on it after many years in FCP7

Sounds like you want to get a Mac... so get one. I have & use both (Apple and Win7)...but to be honest, I hardly ever use the Mac anymore (G5 PPC & FCS6) since Apple left me hanging with a really expensive piece of hardware. I also moved to a AVCHD native workflow and the Win7/Vegas combo runs like a charm! I find I can edit 10x faster in Vegas and have yet to see anything done on any other editor that I can't do with Vegas & AE.
As with any piece of tech... the longer you wait before pulling the trigger...the better. Like my Grandpa used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
2-cents...keep the change!
(you'll need it for that shinynew Mac)

If you go Vegas, you'll want a "Pro" version rather than "Studio".
