How does the 14-42mm compare to the 14-140mm at 14mm?

    Hey guys,
I own the 14-140mm, but am thinking of selling it on ebay, and getting the 14-42, and using the extra cash towards the Nokton 17.5mm when it comes out.

Is there any difference between the 2 lenses at 14mm? That's all I use it for really, exterior daylight wide shots, with a fader ND. I know the 14-42 has a 52mm filter thread while the 14-140 has a 62mm one, so I'm wondering is there's a difference in quality? If not I think I'll get it.

    Thanks!

The 14-42mm is very similar in the 14mm range, but it's worse in the 45mm range.

The 14-45mm is a better lens, and performs about the same as the 14-140mm at equivalent focal lengths.
Cameras : Panasonic GH3 with Grip, Panasonic GH2, Panasonic HMC-150
    OIS Zoom : Lumix 12-35mm f/2.8, Lumix 35-100mm f/2.8

Thanks Dingo! Yeah I've heard good things about the 14-45, but seeing as I only need the lens for 14mm, I'll probably get the cheaper one.

Here's a video shot on the 14-42, looks pretty good:

Very nice footage. Glad to see that you included some morning and evening shoots. ( the light is much more dramatic when the sun is at a low angle )

For video does the resolving power of the lens really matter? Even 1080p video doesn't resolve more than about 800-900 lines. Lenses are typically in the 1100 to 1500 line range to as much as 1900 lines for the 14-140mm on center at 14mm.

If sharpness is your main concern then @ 14mm the 14-140mm is the single sharpest m4/3s lens. Check out the dpreview tests below. Personally I would just get the 12mm F2.0 if you want a good wide angle lens.

Thanks a lot for that. I've ordered the Noktor 12mm 1.6, but I was under the assumption it vignettes with a fader on it? Do you know if this is true or not?

Also, I need a lens for my second gh2 for when the wife borrows it for photos, and you can get the 14-42 for a steal.

    Thanks

    Well said.
Granted, the 14-140mm is not a fast lens at f4.0-f5.6, but man it really does produce very detailed image. I won't part with mine. It just works well with the GH2.
The 14-45mm is a better choice over the 14-42mm.
