HMC150 Editing Systems - What Is Everyone Using??

    Just curious...

If you own an HMC150, what program/editing system are you using to edit this AVCHD footage with?

I ask because I have been trying to edit this camera's footage on FCPX, & have jerky playback issues, & my export has jerky playback issues as well... I also imported this camera's footage into Adobe's CS5.5 editing system, & saw similar issues...

I wrote a long thread about all of the testing I have done so far in trying to resolve this issue, & I go into alot more detail about the issue in the FCPX forum - if you would like to read the thread, here is the link:

    So... just out of curiosity,
what editing systems are you guys using to edit the HMC150's footage with??

    Any problems?
    or smooth playback/smooth exports?

Are any of you transcoding the AVCHD footage first?
If you ARE transcoding, what program are you using to transcode the AVCHD footage with?
And also (If you are transcoding) what settings are you transcoding with? 422? 422(LT)? 422(HQ)? etc...

I know alot of people own this camera, so it's driving me crazy that I have this issue, because I don't really see anyone else writing about this problem (with this camera)... I have been trying to trouble shoot this for almost 2 months now, & need to resolve this soon!

Your input & thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

    THANKS!

When I got my HMC150 (when it first came out), I switched to Vegas Pro and a Windows 7, 64bit machine. It handles multiple tracks of native AVCHD files with no problems at all. If I have a project that includes a wide variety of different file types (.mov, .mts, .avi, etc...) I usually transcode everything to cineform AVI's first with Neo Scene. If I need to do some AE work, I'll transcode to AVI for that too.

I've since added an AF100 and those cameras seem to cut together nicely.
Just used the 150 for this ScareFest quickie:

Before that, I was running FCP6 on a PPC G5....then Apple bailed on the PPC and left me hanging.

In my classroom, I use CS5.5, CS5, FCP 7&X, and we have also used Vegas and have had literally none of the issues that you are seeing, and our macs have lower specs than yours...

Interesting thing about Vegas was that I was running Vegas 8 on a core2duo machine and still had realtime AVCHD playback from the HMC up to 3 layers. People don't believe me but I still have the machine and use it sometimes. It didn't have the problems illustrated here. I have been trying to create conditions where playback is choppy but it's not happening. Need more info, OP...

I also use Vegas but on a Windows 7 32 bit machine. Playback on the native AVCHD isn't perfect, but at quarter resolution I can usually get by. I plan to upgrade to Media Composer in the next few months when I have the money for the academic version. I much prefer that and have used it at school. Also planning a computer upgrade as soon as HDD prices fall a little more.

I'm using a Sandy Bridge 2600k (stock speed) w/ 16 gigs of ram. No CUDA card yet.

I get smooth playback, and scrubbing is reasonably good. Not nearly as smooth as something like DVCPROHD, but it's workable. I've transcoded with Cineform and 5DtoRGB. Both worked great, and made for a much smoother editing experience.

5DtoRGB doesn't have a batch converter on a PC yet, which is kind of annoying. But it's free!

I used to edit natively, but I've since switched to transcoding. It's a smoother editing experience overall. Editing natively is definitely handy for quick things though.

Oh, the other thing I should mention...I've messed around wiht CS 5.5, and scrubbing with avchd on that is noticably more sluggish compared to CS 5.0.3. Dunno why.
