Yeah it was all about revenge in the end. They get back at Batman/Wayne by destroying what he lives to protect. Like Bane says, Batman isn't afraid of death so his punishment must be more severe. The Bane origin story is a device to give Batman motivation and hope, because without hope his imprisonment would mean nothing. That's why the prisoners got to see a glimpse of the sky in that pit.
Because Batman wasn't afraid of his own death, he needed to be offered a chance to escape. Bane didn't think he actually would/could do it.

Reminded me a bit of DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE.

I was thinking, well they have rope. Why not just lasso that last big stone and climb the rope out of there? Why the jump?

    Which also begs the question...

When he finally made it out, there was a rope waiting at the top that he dropped down to the others, so they could get out. You mean to tell me in the months, years others were stuck down there, no one else tried to set them free with this simple solution?

They were locked in cages. The guy said the prison doctor forgot to lock the cage door.
I'm assuming the whole idea of the escape possibilities were very guarded, probably by the same people who payed for the satellite reception so Bruce could watch TV.

The guy also says it's Banes prison now, so maybe it's used by the league of shadows?

That still makes no sense. If they were heavily guarded, what's the point of him dropping the rope down to them at the end?

Maybe they wanted it back? Was there an explicit shot of him doing that? I've seen the film twice now, once yesterday, I don't remember him even dropping it down to them.

Yes, he drops the rope down to them, ostensibly to help them escape.

What I gathered from the film (I've seen it twice now) was that it was a prison, probably kept actual criminals in it at one point, but now it was more of a political prison kind of deal. We don't see the kind of people that would have been responsible for killing Talia's mother and bashing Bane's face in. Now it's a lot of older men and people who probably crossed Bane/Talia/The League of Shadows.

The New Yorker review really nailed my experience seeing this film.

I was pretty underwhelmed by it...
