I have always used the firewire (6 pin) port to transfer data to ApplePro and MBPro from my 170. Never an issue or any problems whatsoever. I have always connected with the camera off FWIW. Never a hiccup or any issues. I have also used stand alone Maxell iDVR drives for direct cam to HDD offload. Also without any issues.

You do know that USB caries power as well?

I never use my camera to offload data, maybe in an emergency....

Firewire CAN pop the fire chip if you're not careful. Doesn't happen often, but has happen to me. They didn't implement a spike voltage filter. USB is a whole different ballgame.

I just install a PCI PCMICIA adapter that I buy from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quatech-16-B...item415f694f6a

Install in the box,and that's it. Fast and cheap.
