Hello, I been using canon 5d and I would like to order the scarlet. I am unexperienced and dont exactly know the diffrence, if I should get the pl mount or the al canon mount. What woyld be a better option? I guess canon mount will only work with canon lenses. Are the Pl mount lenses only cinema lense or I can find photo lenses as well? can I use canon photo lenses like the 24-105 from Canon 5D with the PL mount of the scarlet?
Thanks a lot
cheers.

PL or positive lock mount lenses are generally cinema lenses that tend to be much more expensive than Canon EF mount lenses.
A starting point for a low end PL lens is $4K and can run well over $100K for a high quality set.David W. Jones

Will the Scarlet let you have iris control using EOS lens?
Thanks,

The RED Canon mount offers iris control, IS functionality and autofocus with EOS lenses. I'm not sure how well the autofocus/touchscreen focus works yet.

I'd get the Canon mount Scarlett camera AND the PL Mount option for it. The Canon Mount Scarlett is $9750, pay $2000 for the PL Mount that RED makes, that will end up being $11750. The PL Mount Scarlett is $11250 by itself anyway, so for just $500 more, you'll have BOTH options for the camera. Mind you, you'd have to find some PL lenses to use it with. But this is what I would do.

So just so I'm on the same page. The AI mount that comes with the Scarlet does have Iris control. So you don't have to upgrade to the TI mount to get iris control. Correct?
Sorry but I'm just trying to make sure since the TI mount upgrade is another $1500 and if I don't need it I don't want to order it.
Thanks,
Jake

TI mount is from Titanium instead of Aluminium. Thats all the difference.

I'm just wondering what happened here. I was a RED noob too. I have the Scarlet with the Al Canon Mount which works fine with Canon EF lenses. I'm thinking about getting the PL Mount just as someone mentioned. It seems a good idea to have both. I'm interested in buying my first less that is over 1,000 Canon EF but not sure which would be a good general purpose for someone entering into VFX. 18mm 1.8ƒ seem expense but the way to go. That's a bit price so I was thinking about a 24mm 1.4ƒ.
Most people say go with a prime, but it seems I would get a lot more use out of this. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...f_2_8L_II.html
Not sure how that compares to a prime, or a PL mount.

it's a good lens, but primes are a better bang for buck as they tend to be cheaper, larger aperture, sharper, etc. Remember every stop is TWICE the light. 1.4 to 2.8 is a 4x difference in light loss. But yeah the 24-70 is still good if it fits your needs. The question is would you be better with a dedicated 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm? Unless you are doing run'n'gun live events you won't be zooming mid shot, so better to switch the lens when needed and maximize image quality on each lens type, as well as creative flexibility with low light & DoF and maintain good sharpness wide open.

PL Mount benefit over Al Canon Mount in the scarlet
