Is the HPX250 front end really as good as EX1R?

Very interested in getting this camera, but codec aside, are the images as good as the EX1R? Whether it's one stop slower or not doesn't phase me much. I've shot with the 370 so I have an idea how it will behave in low light. I haven't seen any camera to camera matchups with this camera. When the XF300s came out the web was sick with low light tests and EX1R comparisons, but not so much with this camera. And I can't find any retailers in Houston who have one that I can actually put my hands on and have a look. They want me to buy it first, wait a few days for it to ship from the warehouse, then help me get it fixed if there happens to be a problem. Maybe the world has changed, but you used to be able to kick the tires before you put your money down.

If anyone has any comparative knowledge between the HPX250 and the EX1R or the XF300/305, I would be grateful. It really looks like the right camera for me on paper.

    Thanks
    Kevin

I can't speak to the EX1R specifically, but having used/tested the HPX250, the XF305 and the (original recipe) EX1, I'd say the straight-up image quality of the XF305 and HPX250 is just a notch above the EX1. And the XF305 codec is much better than the EX1, and the HPX250 better still.

If you're up for a road trip to Austin, you might check with Texas Media Systems. They've got both the 250 and 305 in stock, I believe.

I have compared our 250 to our EX1 briefly. If the PAP NR is in setting 2, it is as clean as an EX1, but slower. And, of course, the beauty of the 250 is that it can actually record what it is getting from the processor--10 bit, 4:2:2.

Thanks for the quick replies. There is a big chip prejudice out there and Sony has benefited from it. But if resolution, sharpness and sensitivity is all equal then the codec carries the day.

Has anyone done any green screen work with the HPX250? Would love to see some footage.

I've been pretty impressed with the 250, certainly as sensitive as the EX1 but with 10bit 4:2:2 recording.

if you can't shoot decent green screen material with an HPX 250, consider a different profession.

hi Andy, what to you exactly mean when you say "as sensitive as the ex1, which cam would you prefer for a shot at night on a city street. i'm doing a docu-project in cities (dubai, Nairobi, Berlin) and I need a camera as good as the EX1 in poor light situations, about 30% of the docu will be shot at night. thanks for your response. jean
