Is there anybody out there who is actively using the Nex-5n?
I've been using it post gh1(3), and I'm very happy with the ability it packs. It's lowlight capability feels better than the Mark II, like the old pro sony's, unbelievable. The LL transfers into a very clean image even at very high iso. It has a built in dynamic range increaser (in shadows not highlights) which is beyond a gimmick, with 5 levels to choose from.
It's tiny, but it rocks. The photo options rock too. Sweep panorama can be configured to take a super high megapixel sweeping image, it can be screwed with to produce effects similar to scanner cameras.
Yes, I have also shot stuff that is aesthetically pleasing, but I'm lazy. You can forget the MB stuff for now. I think Grade 1 looks great, and that is fully exposed @ ISO3200 in virtually no light, good range, pleasing noise.

Thanks Reaktor. How do you find image stabilisation? Also, aliasing and moire, is this sometimes a problem? Inerested in your opinion so far as I'm considering the camera for run & gun.

LL: With a lens that has image stabilization, it works well, just like any other system, seemed comparable to GH(x) series Mega OIS. I find that it has less aliasing/moire than 5D, 7D, T2i - but it suffers from the similar problems as the Canon's in downscaling the sensor to 1080. I don't find it a problem.
Leteeci: The GH2/GH13 will have a sharper, higher resolution image, packaged in a nice high bit-rate codec. The 5N, when not in side by side comparison with the GH, or other pro digital cinema options, will have an image that appears to be just as high in resolution. Continuing, the 5N will appear to have better image quality than the GH2/13, just as the 5D image powers through it's technical handicaps, the 5N's sensor and algorithms cause the amount of noise, and low light noise, to be virtually non-existent when compared to most competing cameras. With the extra stops of light the camera can give you, you get an unprecedented amount of flexibility in post-production, where with other cams - you would only be able to see the highlights.

I picked up a 5N last week and used it on (gasp) a paying gig as a B-Camera. I used my Nikon 24mm f2 on a Lensbaby Tilt Transformer to get some very stylized pickup shots, and the footage looked fantastic. We're going to be cutting it with F3 and EX1 footage, so I'll be interested to see how they all work together.

The 5Ns tinyness has its uses. I wouldn't have wanted to take an FS100 or a 5D mkii out on the ice for these shots. Moire is less than the GH2 and aliasing is far less than the 5D. I totally agree with Reaktor, the footage is far more gradeable than the 5D as well as GH2.

I replaced my m42 lenses and 60D with it..best thing I ever done. Trumps the 60d, 7d and 5d2 (I used to have a 5d2 for 2 years) in video IQ and 3200iso, EASILY. Clean as a whistle. I like the noise as it is b&w film like and not the ugly red'ish/rainbow noise and clipping on canon dslrs. AND it fits in my pocket!
..got rid of all my SLR lenses and M42 lenses and buying smaller m39/l39/ltm/rf lenses. NEX 5N is an instant classic! It is a 5d2/7d/60D/D7000 IN A POCKET! Revolutionary, game changer, legendary, awesome! Also dont have any iscoramas anymore and recently got rid of my big Kowa B&H when I sold all my M42 lenses and 60D..and now have a nice tiny Bolex Moller 8/19/1.5 to team it with the 5N (still looking for a small 50mm m39 for a taking lens)..the tiny and light Moller Ana should look soo sweet and perfect on the 5N with an ltm/m39 50mm...smallest, sweetest and sleekest anamorphic rig ever!
...i cant wait.
for now, I have recently bought and all I have is an industar-69 28/2.8, sony 16/2.8, Jupiter 50/2 m39 (selling, as the front barrel rotates during focusing which can't be used with anamorphics, unfortunately found this out when I waited a month to get it )and a bunch of mini grip-gear (manfrotto nano clamp, mini tabletop tripod with micro head, etc, dslr.bot IR dongle for timelapses with iphones, etc.)...AND, all this grip-gear and lenses and body FITS IN MY POCKETS! No backpack, not even a little camera/sachel bag required! I can fit a few things in my pockets and go out on the town with absolutely NO BAG!!!
....in addition to FOCUS PEAKING, HD 60P!, awesome still-image IQ that is BETTER than 60d/7d and same as D7000 (same sensor as D7000) and close enough to FF 5d2 AND all this for ONLY $600?!?!?!
5N FTW!!!!Last edited by FoodDude; 10-11-2011 at 02:37 PM.

Sensor based image stabilization would be really nice to have, being able to have stabilization on my nikon primes would be priceless.
@FoodDude: Seriously man, nobody believes me.

I know what you mean...no one, none of my friends believe me either. Lol. My brother first got it, and I as VERY skeptical..but after some research, some still image tests and video tests and playing with it..I sold ALL my dslr gear the following week, lol. THe only thing that was really holding me back was it looked like a toy and such an amateur p&s. I am not a "pro" shooter anyways and do it all for fun and hobby.. then I weighed the pros and cons of my 60D vs the 5N... NO CONTEST...prolly even more "pros" than a 5D2 as well (only thing the 5d2 has over it is FF still imagery). Only pros of the dslr's over the 5N were ergonomics, buttons, looks more "professional", manual audio (psshh, who really uses the built in audio for primary soundtrack anyways? especially in a dialogue movie/short context) and that's really about it; absolutely nothing regarding IMAGE which what it ALL really boils down to and what we SEE in the final product. Pros of the 5N - 3200 is waaaaay better than ALL the HDSLRs, the ONLY dslr with 60p in full HD, SMALLER footprint than an iPhone and about 3 iphones thick!, $600?!?!?, focus peaking (another revolution for MF lens users!), able to take it anywhere one would look r3tarded with taking a dslr (dinner, lunch, casual outings, bars, clubs, quick walks, dates, street, mass transit, meetings, etc., etc)...the list goes on... Its really going to be hard to beat this 5N.. even though it will most likely be obsolete in time, it will still be a solid performer for years to come..especially as it is basically better than the majority of all the current dslr's to date in many ways.
I really doubt canon will come out with a mirrorless system thats better, and at $600..no way.. Canon is known for CRIPPLING their cameras depending where they sit in their range lineup..and, seeing how the 5N is better than the 60d, 7d, and almost the 5d2, there is no way canon is going to release a cheap mirrorless system better than the 5N..it they did, that would just destroy sales of their own cameras. If anything, canon will be like nikon and release a lame smaller-sensored mirrorless camera system ONLY for sales and to make money off of fools, and not really make a dope compact mirrorless system for true photography users.
Rumors are Nex and Fuji will come out with FF mirrorless compacts interchangeable lens next year. Kudos to Sony and Fuji for catering to photography as a whole and to share REAL image quality and not gimmicky junk to both amateurs, noobs and also knowledgeable gear heads and enthusiasts that actually know a thing or two..instead of just thinking of making a quick buck and entering the new "mirrorless market" with a lame system just because it is where the market is heading.

Who's using Nex-5n?
