I performed an extreme example with ISO 3200 that shows the difference between the GH2 in-camera NR at -2 compared to 0.
IMO I would always leave the NR at -2. The loss of detail (increased mud) and the blockiness is far worse than subtle fine noise.

Wouldn't a better comparison be NR in camera vs. NR in post? I can't imagine most people would shoot at 3200 and use the footage with no NR at all. Normally one would shoot-apply NR-sharpen. No NR will always show more detail.

True Chris, but the whole reason I decided to look closer at the GH2 in-camera NR was due to I saw how poorly it handled noise removal compared to post solutions such as Neat Video.
I first saw this under ISO 1250 which is about the highest I'd ever use, but the shadows looked a LOT better with the fine noise opposed to bubbling blocks and smeared detail.

The better news is thanks to the hack, we can now model noise more accurately for a better post noise reduction such as Neat Video.

    Thanks for this Stevet!
This is the kind of thing I need to know about the (New to me) GH2 in order to make my best workflow decisions.

    Very helpful.
