The answer to that is easy. Neither. I'm committed to the movies I make, not the tools I use to do it with.
The question is not why are we here...it's why do we ask...

It'll be great to have the support, but I'll wager a lot of nickels that it won't unless you acquire the codec from somewhere else. Lotsa variables there; few of them Sony's. If you have the codec, Vegas will read/write to it.

Why would it not, Spot? I know there might be stuff you can't talk about, but in general?

That's a lovely artistic attitude, but at the end of the day you still need a camera and an editing solution. If they don't work together, that isn't good news.

My assumption is that it's because Sony bought Vegas and they have a rather large stake in the success of HDV.

No one is going to buy a different camera because the NLE they have doesn't support what they want. And vice-versa.

If Sony doesn't make/obtain a codec for it, people will move to another NLE, not buy the Sony camera instead. All they'll do is *lose* customers, not gain them.

I'm not supporting Sony's attitude at all; just saying that they're notorious for doing that kind of thing.

All of which is looking at it backwards, anyway. If Panasonic comes out with a prosumer HD cam, they'd better make sure us prosumers have some way of editing the footage. If Vegas needs a codec, Panasonic really should provide one, not Sony.

Jarred did just that, moved to FCP for a moment, but came back to vegas after a week. We all need to pray to the sony gods to get it to work.
