    FCPX - The iMovie Legacy
    #1

There is an interesting video on youTube that compares the interface of iMovie and FCPX. It is interesting to see the design similarities and how you can get a 'feel' for FCPX using iMovie. Given that there is no trial of FCPX it may be useful to some people.

I'm not a fan of FCPX in it's current state. The editing and color grading tools alone push the functionality far beyond what a typical iMovie user would need or even want.

iMovie was a testing ground for FCP X.

Do the FCP X training from Ripple, it's only $40, learn the application properly, then decide what it's really like.

I've already done 2 paying short form project with it, and I whizzed through them in a fraction of the time it normally would take me in FCP 7. You couldn't pay me enough to go back to FCP 7 full time. If I need a missing features, I'll just launch FCP 7 for it. My old v.7 remaining jobs will be finished in v.7, no issues there. No big deal, I'm having fun editing again. FCP X is great.

    Doesn't iMovie have XML export?

Indeed it does. If apple had just put in edl, xml, and omf support they wouldn't have gotten half the complaints. People can adjust to a new interface. But not being able to hand projects off for finishing is a deal killer right now.

I am liking the new interface more and more. iMovie Pro, sure why not? I can do a lot of what I currently do on FCP 7 faster. Who says NLEs still need to based on a old and outdated film editing metaphor? If you were just switching from film cutting, sure. The transition from film to digital is complete now with acquisition fully digital.

Thinking thus, I think Apple once again is leapfrogging their competitors. Course, doing so leaves some people unhappy who have heavily invested in established existing models. My sympathies to them.

The lack of pro features is what holds FCPX back. Apple should detail their roadmap for pro users and allow compatibility between FCP 7 and X.

I agree, VMT. I spent the last couple of days testing out FCP X on things I generally do on a day to day basis. I gotta tell you I'm pretty impressed. Are there things that I'd like to see in future releases of FCP X? Absolutely - namely good multi camera support.

Funny. A client called towards the end of the day yesterday about revising a 3 year old edit - and needing it on his doorstep by no later than Saturday morning. Although the previous Final Cut interface is an old friend, it was almost painful to go back to it after being on FCP X for two days: clip collisions in the older paradigm really eat into short deadline time.

Apple has a new, much more powerful, flexible version of XML coming out. It directly ties in to the plugin API. The minute it's ready, we'll have it, and I think folks will be very happy.

For anyone very familiar and accustomed to doing Multi-Takes in Logic Pro, imagine that paradigm applied to Multiclip edits, along with automatic audio sync.

As a trainer, I can say that the ATPS books and other Apple Authorized Training course ware is said to ship in "late summer". They can't finish and sell both a Level 1 and Level 2 set of books, unless the complete app's functions are taught. Thus, put 1 and 1 together, and figure out what happens in a few months.

Now, if Apple could just get the multi-seat licensing issue worked out...

First off, how do you know this? Second, if so, will it be compatible with other software implementations of XML. If not, why would folks be happy about this?
