HDMI to HD-SDI passthrough would be sweet too!

But I don't think they can do that without making it larger.

And of course it doesn't come with a drive, neither does the Atomos. You buy your own drives and slide them in.

    That's the beauty of it.

    Go BlackMagic!

This comes at a great time, though... could definitely be the new way to deliver material versus HD-CAM tapes. If you think about it, the drives will never go out of stock... and if you can record from a computer through to the HD-SDI then you've got an uncompressed master to send off to whatever country.

    BlackMagic... woot.

I sincerely hope they are ready for the onslaught of buyers. This works for me since as an interim phase and regardless of what camera I buy in the next year it will be a very handy tool for the kit.

Awesome...but...what if we want to record lightly compressed footage to make post easier? Will there be an option to record to a different codec possibly? Or uncompressed only all the time? Still very cool.

I honestly think that this is a move to phasing out tape-based delivery and acquisition for good. I don't know how LONG it'll take, but BlackMagic is definitely a very well installed name in our industry for delivery and acquisition of material, and with something as solid as SSD competing with moving parts tapes? It's almost a no-brainer that the shift happens now.

DOes anyone know if the HD-CAM shortage is still in effect?

I think I read that it's going to be a month or two until production starts up again.

Hmm, this is an awesome announcement. But, I wonder the cost differences when compared to other products when you consider the kind of space needed to hold 422 10-bit Uncompressed...even a minute of it. The copying speed is certainly attractive though, wow.

Anybody know how many GBs 1 minute of 10-bit 422 1920x1080 UNC is? I just exported a 5 second clip and based on my math it's almost 8GB a minute. Granted, I would likely trans-code to something like Prores later since there's no way I could possibly edit these files (not on my system).

128GB SATA III SSD would run you about $300 bucks or so. So for maybe $700 you can get 16 minutes of recording before it would require a dump. Am I getting anything wrong here?

That's what I thought. And, that's to get production started up, then how long to get them stateside, etc.

If there's been any time to ditch the moving parts, it's now. At 350 a pop, five of these would fit into a budget no problem at all, and any worries about the fallacies of drives should vanish with Solid State.

...I'm also biased: I can't stand laying to tape...
