    All alone with F3 menus.

    It seems to be that there isnt much out there to help someone completely understand the in's and out's of the F3's menus.

    Since I dont come from an EX or Cinealta background, it sure feels lonely out there. Does anyone know of a good link to info describing what "Hypergamma" specifically is, what "Cine1, etc" is and what it's doing exactly, how to tweak color temp after setting it, what all these terms are in the PProfile?

    I'm also confused about using S-log and how to implement it and what will be required, and when is it going to be available?

    I have learned a lot by testing what little I was able to, but some solid info would be nice to help speed things up. The manual seems to be of little help when it comes to details.

    There is some very good information at the Sony UK wesite...including an 11 page article on Hypergamma and information on S LOG. As I understand it S Log allows one to capture the entire tonal range of the sensor and can be thought of as a digital negative to be post processed like you would traditional film. The key being you WILL want to post process.
    Hypergamma applies a parabolic curve to the image and extends the dynamic range of the sensor, paticularly in the whites. According to the article, when you select Hypergamma, other settings such as knee, slope, etc. are not required. This helps to minimize set up time with the camera. The examples illustrated that hypergamma can help in challenging high contrast scenes...more color and detail retention in areas that are typically lost.
    It's a pretty interesting read.

    Cinesin, i feel your pain.

    Sony menus make no sense, and are very strangely organized. In addition there is no way of knowing what any of the settings are doing to the image.

    I too am in the same boat, not much info on tweaking, though I have been building some of my own custom "wide" setting. Trying to get the S-Log look without having to wait/pay. When I find something good, I'll post for everyone to use. Till then, happy hunting and we'll have to wait until someone answers what some of the individual controls really change.

    "S-log look" ...isnt there one on the BBC site for ex1/ex3 cameras...I remember loading something like that , a flat look, a few years ago.Didnt like it for the project so we went for the standard "scene file".

    If this is the one you are referencing, it in fact using a standard video gamma and compresses the high end with a knee to effectively extend the dynamic range. It is a very useful profile and when you reduce the sharpening in camera as well, this profile is a nice go-to one for most shooting conditions if you plan to yank the tonal range in post.
