GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

    Hello,

Do any of you guys feel like your gh2 strobes or pulsates when you pan? I understand the issues of shooting 24 frames a second. I also realize that you need to pan at a proper speed. But, I really feel like there is something weird going on here. Oh, it's also not OIS on the lens since the 14-42mm does not have that. I've attached a link to a file right from the camera. Yeah, I'm panning too fast and at the end I get distracted by a flock of geese but even slower pans look like this. Maybe it's the combination of dark trees and white snow? I don't know.... I've never had this issue with any of my other cameras. Just the normal 24 frame issues. I can't put my finger on it but something just doesn't seem right.

    GH2
    14-42mm lens
    24p cinema
    File is around 168mb

The 14-42 does have OIS. It just doesn't have a physical switch for it. Check in the menu and make sure it's off?

You are not the first and will not be the last to report this. There are many who are experiencing the same problem as you are and all GH2s have it. It's just that some people are more sensitive to it than others. I have to admit that I notice it too and I am therefore underwhelmed by the motion characteristics of MY GH2. I really think this is something that a gh2 hack would help a lot with. I'll try to start doing some tests and try out the 80% speed option. If I find anything interesting, I'll report back.

If you did that with a tripod then yes, try turning off the OIS.

Thank you Awelgraven. You know, somebody told me that lens did not have OIS and that just stuck in my brain. The camera was set to mode 1. I hope this solves the problem but I have noticed it with old Nikon lenses as well. Also, does that setting get locked in even in movie mode? The reason I ask is because it's grayed out in the menu under that setting. I will go out and try it again in the morning and report how it turns out. Please let that be the answer! I really want to love this camera. Thanks for the help guys.

You only have access to the OIS switch in picture mode. It doesn't show up in movie mode. But it's troubling that you see it with a manual lens. Anyway, try it.

Yeah, I've noticed it a lot too. My theory is that the picture in 24p is too sharp for its own good, so edges sort of 'pop' in and out. I've experienced the same kind of weird strobing when I turned my HF100's (which has really good motion rendition in 25p) sharpness to the max and added some more in post. Maybe you could try shooting with reduced sharpness and noise reduction, with a soft lens? Also, what shutter speed are you at? Needs to be 40 or 50 for smooth motion, really.

If you Want to pan or use a glidetrack go for 720p 50 fps. If you use 24 p 1080 it looks like s*%t Iam afried.

    my conclusions at the moment:

it's does relate to the sharp image (so it would also be on AF100 for example)
the extra stutter is indeed more noticeable while playing the MTS files than, let's say, an official HD feature.

HOWEVER - there's a world of difference when i watch the same files not on my pc but through Popcorn 110A and Epson EMP-TW700.
a lot more finer 24p playback and minimum stutter.
i still investigate the PC playback- maybe it has to do with - Nvidia GT8600+ crappy monitor (only 60Hrz) + PAL land.

i'll be glad for any new tips on that.
    thanks.
