    Hi guys,

Can you suggest a good cheap deck to use to capture 24p and 24pa tapes from dvx into avid x pro through Mojo with advanced pulldown? DSR 11 is too expensive. JVC 30U? Or would a pvgs 200 or 120 work? At least with the cam, I could have a back up camera and a digital still for my storyboards.
    Thanks.

You can always use a low cost DV camera but the heads and transport system are not really meant for repeated back and forth over long periods of time. But with the cost of cameras being what they are, you can probably get a couple for the price of deck and have a backup camera for those 30i shoots.

    Thanks Michael,

I guess I will just go with the pana gs 120 since it has megapixel capability. I would like my story board shots to have good resolution. Also, I think that when the DVX is recording in 24p or adv, it only records non drop frame? Is this correct? I read that others when they try to capture 24p footage they get a message that says "a drop frame tape was expected". I got that message, went into deck setting in avid xpro and changed the little box to non drop frame and it fixed it. I also changed the pulldown settings in film and 24p setting according to the recorded cadence. (2:3:3:2)

I would try it again now just to see if it was a fluke, but I dont have internet on my editor and have to go to the library to surf the net. Does my workflow sound right?

    Thanks

The DVX100 only records 30 NDF when in 24p advanced or normal. The error message you see is becuase the default state of XPress Pro is most likely set to "drop frame" whel logging. Go to the deck settings and configurations to correct.

Also, when I put a tape in, I don't give it a tape name right away. I hit cancel. I then shuttle the tape into real material and then give it a tape name. This way I am assured of it being tagged correctly as NDF.

The error also occurs when people shoot some color bars at the head of the tape which in the original version could only be done in 30i mode. If the camera was not set up to record NDF while in 30i, then there would be drop frame mixed in with NDF on the tape. I have my camera set up to record NDF regardless of which mode I am in; 30i, 30p, etc. The only time that DF is an issue is when deliverying programming but that is an easy fix since it is only the record side that needs to be drop frame and that can be changed at any time on the sequence side.

As far as captureing, you should juist be selecting DV25, make sure cadence is set to ADVA (2:3:3:2) and away you go.
