I've been searching the web but have yet to find any standalone software to make HD 3D movies from 2 side by side HD cams and output either straight to 3D TV(with shutter glasses) or burn to 3D bluray. Is there anything out there yet?

you do not need special software to edit, but you need some to get your shots ready for editing.
The best is to make all right just from the beginning (when shooting)
this include camera alignement and synchronisation.
camera alignement is possible, while sync. require usually expensive camera with genlock feature.
fortunately sync in post is easy (while tedious) but alignement is almost impossible without costly software.
for sync (setting clip lenght and start of clip ther same on left and right video) you get free tools like strereovideomaker.
once youre clip are same lenght (at frame/field) and properly synched, you have the choice to edit:
One side , then the other reusing the same project.
or
both sides by merging them into a one picture (usually side to side).
this way you can edit (trim/cut, color correct) , apply some transition (like cross fading).
the first solution is the easiest one, for example you edit the left side as 2D, then save the project, replace the left view with the right view, reopen the project.
this require the left and right files having same name but being into different folders, so you just need to rename folders.
The problem is none of this workflow will allow you to preview the result in 3D, but that is not very important since you would get anyway no tool
to correct any problem due to 3D imperfection.
