I'm working on Avid Media Composer 5, and I'm trying to edit some footage from the 7D. I brought the files in by using Link to AMA Files and when I open them in the Composer window or the timeline, they appear to have some kind of effects applied to them, which is keeping them from playing back in real time. I rendered the effect just to see what happens, but it makes the footage look kind of blurry.

Importing the old fashioned way (DNxHD) works fine, but I was under the impression this version of Avid didn't have to do that, so any help here would be great.

    Thanks so much!

What setting is your timeline in? Green/Green? Green/Yellow? If there is a small dot in the middle of the clip when added to the timeline, it is because it is of a different frame rate than the project/timeline and a motion adapter has been added as part of the frame rate conversion.

I am indeed getting the green dots.

How do I change my project settings to accept my footage?

A motion adapter shouldn't keep the video from playing back in real time on an Avid certified machine. I can do it that on my laptop or desktop.

Having said that, I only bring in 7D files via AMA for quick checking. I wouldn't dream of cutting it that way. Maybe on a hot i7 machine, but I don't have one of those.

It does take a bit more processing to do real time frame rate conversion with motion estimation etc. Look at the frame rate of the QT file under MoviePlayer and create a project/timeline that matches it.
