The "Thriller" is the red-headed stepchild of the genre tree. It's often misapplied solely for marketing purposes, the assumption being that it's more palatable to a broader segment of customers than the "horror" or even "sci-fi" monikers are. To (badly) paraphrase the theme from The Incredibles: If everything is a "thriller" then nothing is a "thriller".
