0 db is the analog standard, and -12db is the digital standard they are fairly equivilent. this is because on digital equipment everything above 0db is cliped there isnt any space left unlike on analog where you can peak above 0db. any more questions just ask.

Hi! Thanks for your answer. I knew that but I still can't understand the reason why is -12db. I mean, sometime ago, when I used to edit on Premiere and then transfer to the camera I had the 0db 1k tone. It reached the top of the meters but then, when making a copy on betacam, I turned the 'audio in' knobs in order to fit the 0db 1k tone with the 0db in the vumeter of the magneto.
Now I'm confused about it because I don't know if I should leave all sound behind -12db when doing the transfer to the camara. I also don't know where the needles of the magneto's vumeter should be...
    ???
    Thanks!

    http://web.onetel.net.uk/~peterphmus...3/metering.htm

the 0 on your uv mitter shuld be arond -18,-20 dbfs
the -12 is good for compressed already signal (like music after mixing ) or very acurate without picks signal
for dyalog you need much grater range since the evereg picks might be around 15 db
