I heard that Premiere Elements 8 is just too slow for AVCHD. Apparently it is too weak. Any alternatives?

Premiere Pro CS5 and EDIUS Pro 5.5 and EDIUS Neo 2.5 all scream with AVCHD.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I am playing with Pro CS5 but the footage viewed native it is coming out choppy and there is now sound. But when the file is converted to the WMV format, it is perfect but I would like to avoid converting the files.

Is there something I am doing wrong?

PPro CS5 works best with, powerful CPU and x64 OS.

What do you have for a 'puter?

    Indexing turned off?

Windows indexing is the number one cause of I/O problems with editing if you already have the processing power.

at least for now... and mine is the free versoin that came w/my HMC-150.

Holding off on CS5 until I can afford a computer to make proper use of it.

    Best of luck.

I found out why the trial isn't working for me.

    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/trial/faq/

The trial version is not equipped to fully support all formats.
