If you've worked with the correct composer, you should just put your trust in him. Micromanaging only inhibits their creative juices.

Hello Everyone! I just wanted to announce a couple of updates. First, I finished scoring a short film called "un Minuto", as well as a tremendous amount of advertising work!
I'll do a formal announcement later, but I am finishing up the negotiations and contract work to score my first mainstream feature film! An amazing picture, very cool story, being released in 2012.
I've also been asked to score a 2nd mainstream commercial feature, a large science fiction film, $10 mil budget range. Two features for next year- I'm excited at the creative opportunities with these films and will be giving all of you some more info as these develop.Last edited by JonathanHartman; 12-22-2011 at 11:09 AM.

It's been awhile since I've been back on the boards. I was surprised to see this thread still near the top! That's kind of cool.
Updates: Just wanted to announce that I now have an agent! Making some progress here in LA, and having an agent has been a lot of help.Last edited by JonathanHartman; 12-22-2011 at 10:54 AM.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to post an update:
I've recently completed "The Employer", a pychological thriller. The feature film stars Malcolm McDowell, Paige Howard, and Billy Zane. This film has been great fun working on- I've composed about 75 minutes of original music for the picture.

Hi Jonathan,
I just took the time to read through this whole thread and listen to a hand full of the tracks at your site. I learned some new things and have a better idea of what to expect if I decide to go full steam into the film industry.
I have just completed a bachelors degree in music composition and a going to take a couple years off before going back to grad school. I am still trying to decide whether I want to pursue commercial or concert (art) music. I have a few questions for you as I may be heading in the same direction.
1. Do you still have time to write concert music with your involvement with film scoring? I don't know if I could completely stop writing music specifically intended for live concert performance. I enjoy the challenge of writing music with complex rhythms and counterpoint, elements often distracting in film scores. Have you or anyone that you have worked or studied with managed to maintain a film scoring career while consistently having concert works performed and published?
2. What kind of studio setup do you work with? I am currently running a PC based system and am concerned that I may get into situations where Mac is a must. What is your opinion on Mac vs. PC?
3. What sample libraries have you found to be the best. I am a fan of EastWest and really like the way the interface and sample manipulation works. I am also using Synthogy Ivory which I like very much. Do you have any opinion on these programs and any suggestions for "must have" sample libraries.
4. Finally, what DAW have you come to use the most and what is your process. I currently run Sonar but have so far not been impressed with X1. I have some experience with logic and am also looking at Protools. My main concern is having a good staff editor which Sonar really dropped the ball on with X1. I have heard good things about Protools and Sibelius integration but would like to know how you go about composing in your setup. I have experimented with rewiring Sibelius and Sonar but not with very good results. It seems the best way I can manage right now is composing more complex sections in Sibelius and exporting the MIDI. Just wondering what you commonly do and perhaps ways you have seen your professors and colleagues work.
(PS, anyone is welcome to chime in with their opinions and advice. I am sure plenty of other composers on the site have great things to offer.)
It is exciting to hear about your success in LA, how was NYU by the way?
