I'm not sure if anyone's posted something similar before but I've been playing around with controlling DSLR's using my iPhone and a remote desktop app today.
iPhone remote for Canon DSLR video | Paul Joy
Quite fiddly, but it's possible to control recording, focus, and camera setting etc in situations where you can't go near the camera.

Hi Paul,
This is amazing! Nice research, it would work with a small macbook strapped on the rig. I don't think it would be subtle enough for a focus puller's tool in a take with actors but it really does the job when shooting in areas hard of reach. These iphone apps keep surprising me!

Laggy. That will be a lot more enjoyable on an iPad too.
