It depends on what you want to do. Why don't you try the demo?
For that matter, you can also download an After Effects demo (if you haven't used it already).

Combustion is also a very powerful tool. It has a somewhat steep learning curve because of the interface concept, but if you learn it, you're halfway to learning discreet's big boy line (flame, inferno, smoke, etc). It does some things very well and better than AE, others AE does better. It's really a matter of preference. I prefer AE. Do like Pais said and snag the demo and check it out.
