I recently acquired the panasonic anamorphic lens and have been pleasantly surprised by the image quality. However, I noticed on the instructions that when using the lens the OIS should be off. Why is this so? Initial tests seem to show that it works fine with it on. I'm planning on transfering to film - is it possible that some strange movement from the OIS will show up on the big screen?
any help would be appreciated.

my understanding of this is that the ois lense would create distorting anomallies on the outer edge of the frame most noticeably, the picture gets streched and blurred increasingly towards those outer edges when the ois element is in action. it is not that noticeale, but i believe becomes more percievable when zoomed in.. it actually a neat effect, and so ive used it in a couple shots . if you dont notice any difference after extensive testing, then there you go , but i would test out every situation you would need that for before any concrete shooting takes place.

i also thought - hey, it looks fine to me - and hit the OIS while shooting with the anamorphic. i screwed up some shots like that! it turned up to be shaky in a weird way.
my guess regarding the logic of it is that the anamorphic and the built in Leica are separate lenses. the OIS is dealing with the built-in Leica alone while the anamorphic adapter is attached to the body of the camera and therefor can not be influenced by the OIS. there's no way to make the two lenses stay alined while OIS is on.
although, as iamloser pointed, it's not as bad in wide shots...

One of the main problems with trying to use OIS and an anamorphic adapter is that the servos driving the OIS will tend to overshoot their mark due to the single axis distortion of the adapter. If used together, there can be noticeable problems, but if you stay toward the wide end of the zoom range, you can reduce the issues. Better to use some other camera stabilization method with the adapter.
